Haller repeats Cristiano Ronaldo record in Champions group round

Sebastien Haller wrote his name next to Cristiano Ronaldo. This Tuesday, the Ajax forward opened the scoring in the match against Sporting Lisboa at the close of the group stage of the Champions League. Beyond the joy for his loved ones, on an individual level that achievement has an important value.

The 27-year-old Haller has become the second footballer in history to score at least one goal in every group stage match of the Champions League. Thus, the African repeated the feat achieved by the Portuguese star during the 2017-18 campaign, when he was still wearing the Real Madrid shirt.

With minutes ahead in the clash against the ‘Leones’, Haller billed ten times throughout the 2021-22 of the ‘Orejona’. The Ajax man started with a poker (four shouts, not counting today’s) against the rival he faces on this date. He then made three to Besiktas in two games and two to Borussia Dortmund in the same number of games.

If we go back to the 2017-18 season, Cristiano Ronaldo scored nine goals in all six group stage dates. The Portuguese’s victims in that Champions League (which won the ‘White House’ against Liverpool) were Borussia Dortmund, Tottenham and APOEL Nicosia from Cyprus.

On the other hand, according to MisterChip, the international with Côte d’Ivoire is the one with the least disputed duel (six) needed to reach 10 goals in the Champions League. The closest is Erling Haaland with seven, the Brazilians Adriano and Roberto Firmino and the Senegalese Sadio Mané with eleven contests.

The record goal

Sebastien Haller was fouled by Daniel Braganca. In principle, the referee ignored the infraction, but communication with the VAR changed the referee’s decision. Then, the African squared in front of the ball and after the sound of the whistle he finished hard to put the 1-0 through the penalty kick.
