‘Jefecito’ in a new challenge: Mascherano was appointed as coach of the Argentine Under 20 team

Javier Mascherano, world runner-up in Brazil 2014, takes on a new challenge. His long career is now required to take on the challenge of leading the Argentina Sub 20 team. His work will begin in January 2022, with a technical command that will be completed as the days go by.

The announcement was made with a publication on social networks, where you can see the former soccer player next to Claudio Tapia, president of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) body.

Mascherano, who played for more than 15 years in the Argentine national team and became one of the footballers with the most presence in the “albiceleste”, participated in two Olympic Games, two youth World Cups and four senior World Cups, the last one in Russia 2018 .

As a midfielder he stood out in River Plate, Corinthians of Brazil, West Ham and Liverpool of England, and Barcelona of Spain, before announcing his retirement in November 2020 at the Estudiantes de La Plata club.

In the Sub 20 team, the 37-year-old coach will replace Fernando Batista, who left office days ago to accompany José Pékerman in the Venezuelan national team.

The AFA continues to bet on former Argentine players to take charge of the minor teams. Lionel Scaloni is in the senior team alongside Walter Samuel and Roberto Ayala. In addition, Pablo Aimar is in charge of the Under 17 team.
