The Premier League is going through a crisis, due to the outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19) that has already hit nine of the 20 clubs. In the midst of a context of high alert, Manchester City could become this Friday the tenth team affected by the increase in positive cases and Pep Guardiola, the infected.
The Catalan coach, as usual before facing a league engagement, had an appointment with the media on the eve of the visit to Newcastle. However, the press conference was canceled and it was known that the reason was related to the COVID-19 test he underwent.
The media noted that the 50-year-old coach received an inconclusive coronavirus test result. In that sense, Guardiola had to do a new PCR to know precisely his status. Hours later, in England they confirmed that Pep was negative in the test that was carried out this Friday.
As it is remembered, the coach of the ‘Ciudadanos’ left Manchester last Wednesday to travel to Spain and appear at the farewell of Sergio Agüero. The DT accompanied the Argentine, who announced his retirement from football from the Camp Nou stadium facilities. Right away, Guardiola returned home.
With the negative in hand, the coach received the go-ahead from the Premier League to be part of the delegation that will face the Magpies in the match agreed for nine in the morning (Peruvian time) corresponding to matchday 18 at St. James Park Stadium.
In this way, Guardiola was scared by the coronavirus. Although, the Spanish already suffered last year the loss of his mother due to this disease. In fact, Pep takes advantage of his public appearances to send messages to the population in which he invites absolute caution in the face of the rebound in cases.
“I am worried, not because we are going to cancel or break the league, but because in society the virus is here and people are suffering. Some people, the staff here, have it right now and we have talked to the players almost every day and we have told them to be careful, to stay safe, to be healthy, (wear) masks, social distance ”he said this week.
Premier League canceled matches
Last Thursday, the English championship announced the suspension of five matches corresponding to date 18. All for causes related to the coronavirus. The duels are: Manchester United-Brighton, Southampton-Brentford, Watford-Crystal Palace, West Ham-Norwich (all Saturday) and Everton-Leicester (Sunday).
Previously, Tottenham-Brighton, Brentford-Manchester United and Burnley-Watford commitments were postponed for the same reason.
